I am not one of those people who naturally enjoys drinking smoothies. If I make a smoothie it needs to remind me more or less like a dessert in order for me to be able to enjoy it.

This type of vegan protein powder had the most natural flavor that I had tasted so far. While still being nice and sweet and very vanilla-y. It tasted the best in smoothies in comparison to the brands that I had tried prior.

Even when compared to some more expensive brands Vega seemed to just taste better in smoothies. And didn’t leave me feeling like I was drinking a protein shake.

This protein powder brand is made up of a base of pea protein, brown rice protein, and hemp protein. Making it a healthy and vegan friendly option!


Vanilla Vega protein powder has a sweet, slightly artificial vanilla flavor. Personally, I really enjoyed the sweetness and the obvious vanilla, though it may not be for everyone.

I prefer sweeter smoothies and found this to be just sweet enough to make a smoothie feel like a treat instead of a protein boost.


When you make a Vega protein shake it is pretty obvious that it contains protein powder. Vega isn’t nearly as gritty as some brands that I have tried, but it is still obvious that it is a protein powder.

I was able to ignore this, especially when making fruit smoothies. Since the grittiness became much less apparent with the texture of a fruit smoothie.


I found vanilla Vega protein powder to be incredibly versatile. So much so that I even used it in some of my baking recipes with excellent results.

Because it is vanilla, it goes well with most smoothie recipes and can even help to camouflage more leafy smoothies. It can be added to baked goods and oatmeal as well and provides a nice vanilla flavor.

Chocolate Vega Protein Powder

This flavor of Vega protein is probably the second most popular option next to the vanilla. It is another simple flavor that is generally a crowd-pleaser and helps chocolate lovers to get by.

Though I am not a huge fan of chocolate, I do enjoy it as an occasional treat. This chocolate Vega protein powder provides a healthier option to a chocolate milkshake. Not to mention the lack of milk and the fact that it is vegan friendly!

I never tried it but I suspect that this chocolate-flavored protein would go well in a variety of baked goods. As well as in things like oatmeal and chia seed pudding.

Overall, if you are a chocolate lover, I think that this flavor would be worth giving a try. It gives you an excellent option when you are craving something sweet and chocolaty that isn’t extremely unhealthy.

The chocolate flavor is a nice light chocolaty flavor that is more or less what you would expect. It isn’t overpowering but is obviously chocolate.

Like the vanilla flavor, it is slightly artificial tasting but not obviously so.


The texture is much like the vanilla again. I am sure that is because the formula between the two flavors is nearly the same.

I would go so far as to say that the grittiness is a little more obvious in the chocolate flavor. Probably because it doesn’t go as well with every smoothie recipe, so I found the texture to be more obvious.

It is also just a bit chalky, most likely as a result of the added cocoa powder, which is very powdery by nature.


As I mentioned above, I found the chocolate Vegan protein powder to be much less versatile than the vanilla flavor.

I know that many enjoy the combination of chocolate and fruit, but it is not a favorite of mine. So, I was often stumped when it came to creating smoothies. It also didn’t pair well with stronger tasting greens such as spinach which I often include in my smoothies.

If you are wanting to drink smoothies for added fruit and vegetable servings, you would probably want to stick to vanilla protein powder. The chocolate is better designed for pure protein shakes.
